Moni Gurung's life journey began in Bhutan, but his family faced political turmoil and sought refuge elsewhere. They first settled in Sikkim, India, before finding a home in the Khudunabari refugee camp in Nepal. It was there that Moni's path was influenced by his friend Yadu Kuikel, who was already immersed in the practice of Shito-Ryu Karate. Guided by dedicated coaches like Sensei Khem Rai, Sensei Tila Chan Dhimal, Sensei Late Dawa Tamang, and Sensei Shiva Rai, under the watchful eye of Sensei Tryamphu Rai, founder of Shito-Ryu Karate of Bhutan (SKAB). His dedication and talent led him make a name for himself in Nepal and abroad by wining multiple gold medals in both national and international karate and kickboxing championships. Notably, he was honored with the “best fighter” in International Karate and Kickboxing Championship held in Kalimpong, India in 2004. Achieving a significant milestone, Moni attained his black belt in Karate that same year and currently holds a 2nd Dan black belt in Karate.

Transitioning from a competitor to a coach, Moni dedicated over five years of his life to coaching in the picturesque regions of Sikkim and Kalimpong. His expertise and guidance have been instrumental in nurturing and shaping the careers of numerous aspiring athletes, leading to production of both regional and national champions. Moni’s passion for excellence and unwavering commitment led to the development of the sports community, inspiring countless individuals to achieve their highest potential. His expertise and experience caught the attention of the TransAmerican Shito-Ryu Shobukan Karate (TASK), USA, where he now holds the prestigious position of Executive Director.

His commitment to service goes beyond the dojo. Simultaneously, Moni has a distinguish career in the U.S. Army. He has been a dedicated member of the Army since 2012, serving in various capacities and locations around the world. Moni's deployments have taken him to regions such as Korea, Africa, Kuwait, and various states within the United States. His dedication to the Army's mission is evident in his current role as a U.S. Army recruiter, where he plays a vital role in identifying and inspiring new talents to join the military ranks. His karate background has endowed him with mental and physical fortitude, crucial for excelling in his Army career. These highlights his sense of duty and devotion to his country.

Moni's intellectual pursuits are equally impressive, as he holds a bachelor's degree in business administration, reflecting his diverse skills and determination to excel in various facets of life. Moni’s life story exemplifies determination, excellence, and a deep commitment to both the martial arts and his country.
